Event Description

Registration for the CDI has now closed. If you still wish to participate, please contact Dr. Meg Gregory at meggregory@wustl.edu.

Redesigning your course from last year for in-person or hybrid instruction? Tackling a new-to-you course or a brand new course this fall? New to WashU and to planning your own courses? The CTL’s Course Design Institute (CDI) is for you!

This two-week course design institute will guide participants in planning and preparing to teach a course that is framed and supported by the latest research in teaching and learning. The CDI will be conducted remotely via Zoom and Canvas and will include daily self-paced learning modules and cohort-based synchronous sessions, along with guided facilitation from CTL staff.

During the CDI, facilitators will model and discuss a range of tools and strategies that can enhance instruction and student engagement, ensure alignment between course goals and assessments, and establish an inclusive learning environment for all of your students.

Overall time commitment for participating in this program includes 2-3 hours of daily independent work and 60 minutes of synchronous connection via Zoom on 8 of the 10 weekdays during the 2-week program. Synchronous cohort sessions will take place at 10am CDT Monday-Friday for the 2-week program.

Participants in the program will:

· Learn about and employ backwards design to develop a course plan, which integrates learning objectives with assessments, assignments, and activities, for their upcoming course;

· Build one or more units (or modules) for their course;

· Discover strategies for helping their students thrive, including plans for promoting meaningful interaction, social presence, and equitable learning;

· Develop effective assessments to facilitate and measure student learning

· Experience Canvas from a student perspective.

Please contact Dr. Meg Gregory, meggregory@wustl.edu, with questions.

Note that this course design institute is primarily open to faculty teaching this Fall at WashU. If you are a graduate student or postdoc who will be an instructor of record and would like to participate, please contact ctl@wustl.edu for next steps. A limited number of spots may be available for graduate students and postdocs depending on faculty participant demand.
