SUMMARY:Language Teaching & Learning Spring Showcase 2026
DESCRIPTION:The CTL and Coalition for Language Teaching & Learning invite language instructors from across departments to participate in our Spring Showcase Show & Tell Event on Friday\, March 27th\, from 3-4pm\, with happy hour to follow from 4-5pm. This event is meant to be a fun\, low-stress (post-Spring Break) opportunity for language instructors to get together\, share\, and learn from each other. \nThis event will feature participants briefly sharing a favorite engaging grammar activity that might transfer to other language-teaching contexts. Make sure the activity can be described in just a few minutes\, since we’ll be doing lightning rounds! \nAll participants will create a single PPT slide that includes your name\, a brief description of the activity\, the level of course the activity is appropriate for\, and what you see as its benefits. The slide need not be fancy! Participants will share their ideas and each PPT slide will be collected and redistributed together with the others as a single PDF to all event participants as a “resource gallery” for future use. \nAll language instructors including faculty\, postdocs\, and grad students who are teaching independently\, are welcome to participate. If you can’t make it for the whole hour\, you are welcome to still participate when you can. Advance registration is required. All attendees must plan to bring an activity to share. \nFor questions about the event\, please email Elina Salminen at elinasalminen@wustl.edu. \n  \nRegistration\n\n\n\n \n InstagramThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Preferred First Name (if different)WUSTL Email Address(Required)\n \n What is your role at WashU?(Required)Please Choose One:Adjunct InstructorAdministrator (Deans\, etc.)Assistant ProfessorAssociate ProfessorGraduate StudentLecturerLibrarianOtherPostdocProfessor (Full)Professor of PracticeSenior LecturerStaffTeaching ProfessorVisiting ProfessorIf you chose "Other\," please describe:Year in Graduate Program(Required)12345678910+Primary Program/Department(Required)Please Choose One:African and African American StudiesAmerican Culture StudiesAnthropologyArchitectureArt (Visual Art)Art History and ArchaeologyAudiology and Communication SciencesBiologyBiomedical Engineering (BME)BusinessChemistryClassicsCollege Writing ProgramComparative Literature & ThoughtComputer Science and Engineering (CSE)Continuing & Professional Studies (CAPS)Danforth CenterDBBS (Biochemistry Biophysics and Structural Biology)DBBS (Biomedical Informatics & Data Science)DBBS (Cancer Biology)DBBS (Computational and Systems Biology)DBBS (Developmental Regenerative and Stem Cell Biology)DBBS (Evolution Ecology and Population Biology)DBBS (Human and Statistical Genetics)DBBS (Immunology)DBBS (Molecular Biology)DBBS (Molecular Genetics and Genomics)DBBS (Molecular Microbiology and Microbial Pathogenesis)DBBS (Neurosciences)DBBS (Plant and Microbial Biosciences)Division of Computational and Data Sciences (DCDS)Earth\, Environmental\, and Planetary Sciences (EEPS)East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC)EconomicsEducationElectrical and Systems Engineering (ESE)Energy Environmental and Chemical Engineering (EECE)Engineering Communication CenterEnglishEnvironmental StudiesFilm and Media StudiesGenetics CounselingGermanic Languages and LiteraturesGlobal StudiesHistoryImaging ScienceInstitute of Materials Science and Engineering (IMSE)Jewish Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (JIMES)LawLibrariesLinguisticsMathematicsMechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS)MedicineMSTPMusicN/A University AdministrationNursingOccupational Therapy (Rehabilitation and Participation Science)OtherPerforming ArtsPhilosophy (Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology)Physical TherapyPhysicsPolitical SciencePsychological and Brain SciencesPublic Health & Society (A&S)Public Health (School of)Religious StudiesRomance Languages and LiteraturesSever InstituteSocial WorkSociologyStatistics and Data ScienceWomen Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS)If you chose "Other\," please describe:The Center for Teaching and Learning is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all participants. SUMMARY:Coffee\, Tea & ChatGPT: Review of What We Know about AI and Learning So Far
DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy coffee\, tea\, and snacks with a side of research into AI’s impact on learning! While the internet is full of writing about AI\, the pool of peer-reviewed\, evidence-based research is much smaller. In this session\, we’ll provide an overview of and commentary on what we really know about AI. We will explore both possibilities and concerns that emerge from the data and end with a discussion of how this information might shape our future pedagogical strategies. \nIf you have questions about this event\, contact Anna Cunningham. \n  \nRegistration\n\n \n X/TwitterThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Preferred First Name (if different)WUSTL Email Address(Required)\n \n What is your role at WashU?(Required)Please Choose One:Adjunct InstructorAdministrator (Deans\, etc.)Assistant ProfessorAssociate ProfessorGraduate StudentLecturerLibrarianOtherPostdocProfessor (Full)Professor of PracticeSenior LecturerStaffTeaching ProfessorVisiting ProfessorIf you chose "Other\," please describe:Year in Graduate Program(Required)12345678910+Primary Program/Department(Required)Please Choose One:African and African American StudiesAmerican Culture StudiesAnthropologyArchitectureArt (Visual Art)Art History and ArchaeologyAudiology and Communication SciencesBiologyBiomedical Engineering (BME)BusinessChemistryClassicsCollege Writing ProgramComparative Literature & ThoughtComputer Science and Engineering (CSE)Continuing & Professional Studies (CAPS)Danforth CenterDBBS (Biochemistry Biophysics and Structural Biology)DBBS (Biomedical Informatics & Data Science)DBBS (Cancer Biology)DBBS (Computational and Systems Biology)DBBS (Developmental Regenerative and Stem Cell Biology)DBBS (Evolution Ecology and Population Biology)DBBS (Human and Statistical Genetics)DBBS (Immunology)DBBS (Molecular Biology)DBBS (Molecular Genetics and Genomics)DBBS (Molecular Microbiology and Microbial Pathogenesis)DBBS (Neurosciences)DBBS (Plant and Microbial Biosciences)Division of Computational and Data Sciences (DCDS)Earth\, Environmental\, and Planetary Sciences (EEPS)East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC)EconomicsEducationElectrical and Systems Engineering (ESE)Energy Environmental and Chemical Engineering (EECE)Engineering Communication CenterEnglishEnvironmental StudiesFilm and Media StudiesGenetics CounselingGermanic Languages and LiteraturesGlobal StudiesHistoryImaging ScienceInstitute of Materials Science and Engineering (IMSE)Jewish Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (JIMES)LawLibrariesLinguisticsMathematicsMechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS)MedicineMSTPMusicN/A University AdministrationNursingOccupational Therapy (Rehabilitation and Participation Science)OtherPerforming ArtsPhilosophy (Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology)Physical TherapyPhysicsPolitical SciencePsychological and Brain SciencesPublic Health & Society (A&S)Public Health (School of)Religious StudiesRomance Languages and LiteraturesSever InstituteSocial WorkSociologyStatistics and Data ScienceWomen Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS)If you chose "Other\," please describe:The Center for Teaching and Learning is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all participants. SUMMARY:Dr. Justin Shaffer: The Importance of Structure and Scaffolding in STEM Course Design
DESCRIPTION:The CTL is pleased to welcome Dr. Justin Shaffer for this special workshop focused on designing effective STEM courses. This event is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Here & Next. \nAbout the workshop: High structure course design is an evidence-based strategy used to engage and scaffold students throughout the learning process via pre-class content acquisition and formative assessment\, in-class active learning and problem solving\, after-class review and practice\, and frequent summative assessment. This model of course design has been shown to increase student learning\, reduce performance gaps\, and promote development of students’ self-regulated learning skills. By the end of this workshop\, participants will be able to explain what high structure course design is\, describe how high structure course design is beneficial to student learning and other outcomes\, and develop ideas for implementing principles of high structure course design into their own courses. \n  \nDr. Justin Shaffer\nAbout Justin Shaffer: Justin Shaffer\, PhD\, is the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies and a Teaching Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering and in Quantitative Biosciences and Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. Justin is the author of the book High Structure Course Design which gives practical hands-on advice for creating STEM courses that engage students in and out of the classroom and improve student outcomes. Justin is an award-winning educator who has taught 8500+ students since 2012 in the areas of chemical engineering\, biomedical engineering\, biology\, and anatomy and physiology and has published 25+ peer-reviewed journal articles and teaching materials on the efficacy of high structure courses\, active learning\, and related topics. SUMMARY:AI Learning Community: Teaching with Custom AI Chatbots
DESCRIPTION:With generative AI making its way into all manner of domains\, educators have a role to play in teaching students how to use AI effectively and ethically\, as well as when to avoid using it altogether. One way we can exercise some agency in this work is to make use of custom AI chatbots. By designing interactive AI agents that fit our teaching goals\, might we be in a better position to help students learn with and about AI? \nThis learning community is for instructors interested in experimenting with custom AI chatbots in their teaching. We will look at tools for building chatbots\, from ChatGPT’s “GPTs” and Gemini’s “Gems” to education-focused platforms like BoodleBox and Cogniti. We will also explore use cases for custom chatbots in teaching and learning along with promising practices for using custom chatbots to support student learning. \nFormat\nSeven sessions on Zoom from 2:00 – 3:00 pm CST on the following Tuesdays:\n•September 2\, 16\, 30\n•October 14\, 28\n•November 11\n•December 2 \nA Teams environment will be available for notes\, questions\, comments\, collaboration\, and resource sharing. \nFor questions about this learning community\, contact Anna Cunningham. \nRegistration\nAdvance registration has ended. SUMMARY:Language Teaching Spring Showcase Show & Tell 2025
DESCRIPTION:The CTL and Coalition for Language Teaching & Learning invite language instructors from across departments to participate in our Spring Showcase Show & Tell Event on Friday\, April 4th from 3:30-4:30pm\, with happy hour to follow from 4:30-5:30pm. This event is meant to be a fun\, low-stress (post-Spring Break) opportunity for language instructors to get together\, share\, and learn from each other. \nThis event will feature participants briefly sharing a favorite activity that fosters intercultural competence that might transfer to other language-teaching contexts. \nRegister Here\nRegistration for this event has now closed. If you’d like to participate\, email Elina Salminen directly.

SUMMARY:Navigating Charged Topics in the Classroom: A Panel of WashU Instructors
DESCRIPTION:Higher education has been said to have three core missions: research\, teaching\, and a social-political mission. But is this social-political mission really just a “third mission” on the periphery of the other two? Or should those of us who teach at universities see it as central to providing rigorous\, relevant\, engaging\, and thought-provoking education? \nThe 2024/25 academic year presents ample opportunities to address this question in practical terms\, not merely philosophical ones. As St. Louis and the nation commemorate ten years since Michael Brown’s death amid a heated election season and with global conflicts spilling onto our campuses\, faculty are compelled to rethink the social-political mission of higher education and consider ways of integrating this mission into course policies and classroom practices\, while facilitating conversations that arise from the charged current context. \nThis panel offers a unique space for a courageous conversation among faculty members who teach socially and politically charged topics. Together\, we will explore different approaches to facilitating conversations about politics and share successful policies and practices for doing so. \nPanelists:\nDewitt Campbell\, Gephardt Institute for Civic and Community Engagement\nAyala Hendin\, Jewish\, Islamic\, and Middle Eastern Studies\nCaitlin McMurtry\, Brown School\nFroggi VanRiper\, Environmental Studies \nFor questions about this panel discussion\, contact Elina Salminen. \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Polished: College\, Class\, and the Burdens of Social Mobility
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Melissa Osborne\nWashU is pleased to welcome Dr. Melissa Osborne\, Associate Professor of Sociology at Western Washington University\, to our campus to speak about first-generation and low-income students. A reception will follow Dr. Osborne’s presentation. \nPolished: College\, Class\, and the Burdens of Social Mobility\nFor low-income and first-generation students at elite schools\, college can feel like entering a whole new world. Along with academic and financial challenges\, their emotional lives also shift as they navigate different cultural and class backgrounds. These students often face a difficult choice: blend in with their peers and abandon their former lives\, or stay true to themselves\, risking isolation from other students. In this talk\, Melissa Osborne\, PhD will share insights from their book Polished\, based on interviews and ethnographic fieldwork with 150 first-generation and low-income students at 18 selective colleges and universities. Osborne reveals how the support systems meant to help these students can unintentionally reshape their identities\, often creating tension between their aspirations and their connections to family and community. Without direct institutional support\, this emotional struggle can lead to feelings of alienation\, mental health challenges\, and difficult decisions about balancing upward mobility with authenticity. \nThis event is sponsored by Here & Next. \nFor further details and registration\, please see the event listing in Happenings at WashU or contact Máire Murphy\, Project Coordinator\, Office of the Provost.
