Leading with Intention

First semester can feel like a whirlwind of classes, club meetings, and social time. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement. Nevertheless, there’s a powerful factor that has the potential to significantly reshape your college experience: intentionality. When I reflect on my own first semester, it becomes clear that I had been neglecting something pivotal – a sense of purpose. At first, I didn’t quite grasp its importance. I assumed my actions were well-intentioned, but I wasn’t taking the time to think deeply about them. That all changed when I discovered being intentional in everything I do. It’s a game-changer that can impact every aspect of your life – from achieving your goals to mastering time management and discipline. Embracing intentionality can take many forms. You can start by being intentional about your schedule – asking yourself how you want to spend each precious hour of the day. And don’t forget about self-care! When I first started this, I would ask myself questions like, “Will an hour on TikTok truly relax me, or would I feel more rejuvenated by journaling or taking a peaceful walk around the beautiful campus?” Or, if I would take on another commitment, I would ask myself, “what do I hope to get out of this,” and “how will this better myself or the people around me?” All of these questions have allowed me to lead with intention.

The Importance of Relationships

At WashU, I discovered one of the privileges of being a student: the opportunity to forge deep, meaningful relationships. Our campus is a vibrant tapestry of diverse backgrounds, filled with fellow students, faculty, and staff who are true experts in their respective fields. During my first year, I was enthusiastic to connect with my fellow students. I am grateful for all the friends I have met who have taught me more than I could even imagine through learning about their lives, passions and goals. Additionally, uncovering the rich life stories of my professors is extremely enlightening. The power of building important bonds with staff members cannot be overstated. They often become mentors who will guide you throughout your entire journey at WashU. So, embrace this incredible opportunity to create meaningful connections, and let them enrich your academic and personal growth.

Having Control of Your Schedule

Whether we like it or not, we all have just 24 hours in a day. It’s incredibly easy to find every hour filled with activities, but time management is key. Now, I know that managing your time can seem like a daunting task, but it’s absolutely essential. Regardless of your personal preferences, having a system in place is vital. Consider tools like Google Calendar, Notion, or even the trusty old paper calendar. Don’t forget, if you need guidance, the Learning Center’s peer coaches are here to help. By planning out your days and weeks, you gain control over your time. It’s all too common for days to slip away as you dash from one class to another. But with careful planning, you can make time for studying, quality moments with friends, and most importantly, self-care. I can personally attest that planning out my days has provided me with a level of freedom I never thought possible. So, take charge of your 24 hours and don’t forget, if you need guidance, the Learning Center’s Academic Skills Peer Coaches are here to help!
