Navigating Uncertain Terrain: A Critical Examination of AI-assisted Tools in Instruction of Writing Intensive Courses

Event Description

Join the CTL for an interactive half-day workshop, focused on the challenges and opportunities associated with AI-assisted writing tools.  If you are concerned (or curious) about the rise of AI-assisted tools in writing instruction, this is your opportunity learn more (and to prepare for the coming semester).

Together, we will explore AI’s impact on fundamental aspects of academic writing, including critical thinking, creativity, and originality, while emphasizing the importance of academic integrity.  Participants will share experiences, grapple with the challenges of technology integration, develop strategies to ensure academic integrity, and discuss the future of writing intensive classes in an AI-driven educational landscape.

Participants in this workshop will:

  • Review the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT
  • Identify challenges of teaching writing in the age of AI assisted tools
  • Share strategies for adapting writing assignments in the age of AI-assisted tools
  • Discuss the use and limitations of AI detection tools
  • Collaborate on revised and updated assignments
  • Design or revise assignments for upcoming classes

This workshop is primarily intended for instructors who require a significant amount of student writing in their courses.
