Event Description

Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed was written over 50 years ago but continues to be frequently cited across many teaching and learning contexts. The five-chapter book focuses on equitable teaching and lays out many ideas that are now considered central to good teaching: acknowledging student agency, seeding student investment, building classroom community, and more. This reading community will give us an opportunity to deeply engage with a scholar who is perhaps referenced more often than actually read, and to discuss both the immediately practical teaching strategies he offers as well as his ambitious call for education that truly empowers students. Our reading community will meet on Thursdays 3-4pm on Sept 17, 24; Oct 1, 8, 15.
