Leading Effective Paper Discussions: A 3-Rule Approach for Engaged and Impactful Seminars

Event Description
Reading, interpreting, discussing, and critiquing research papers are central to most graduate-level and upper-level undergraduate seminars. But these discussion-based classes sometimes don’t go as planned (if they are planned at all). This brief session is based on a recently published article by John Drake, a professor in the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia. Drake advocates an approach called appreciative reading and offers three rules for leading discussion of a research paper: 1: start with a summary, 2: plan for the life cycle of the discussion, 3: ensure that disagreement is well-founded. This interactive session will explore Drake’s 3 rules and offer specific advice that you can employ in your next discussion-based class.
