The Fall 2024 WashU ISTP Learning Community has been cancelled. Check back for the next time we offer this opportunity!

This community will focus on select components of a free online six-week course offered through the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project and in partnership with the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.

Note: Although STEM is literally in the title, the content is not exclusive to courses that we consider “STEM”. It is true that the examples in the course itself are all STEM-based but in our local community we can work together on the challenges faced in other disciplines as well.

The six-week course is designed to advance the awareness, self-efficacy, and ability of postdocs and graduate students, to cultivate inclusive learning environments for their students. Participants will engage in deep reflection and discussion around topics of equity and inclusion across a variety of institutional contexts.

Asynchronous online activities within edX will be extended through a synchronous learning community co-facilitated by Lisa Kuehne from the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and (tba).  These sessions will be offered as hybrid meetings—you can participate online or in person.

 Schedule of discussion topics:

  • Introductions and Course Overview
  • Diversity Equity and Inclusion in Higher Education
  • Instructor Identity
  • Student Identity
  • Course Design: Assessments
  • Course Design: Syllabus
  • Classroom Climate
  • Reflection and Next Steps

Colleagues at member institutions are important contributors to the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project (ISTP). The ISTP aims to build and sustain a diverse network of institutions through learning communities of trained facilitators to advance inclusive learning and teaching on their campuses.
