What is MIRROR?
While end-of-semester student evaluations can help instructors determine what changes they might make for future versions of a course, they do not have much impact on current students. If you are interested in collecting useful, actionable information that can have a positive impact on your current course consider requesting a Midterm Course Feedback session (MIRROR).
MIRROR stands for Midterm Instructor Reflection and Review. The MIRROR project is an opportunity for faculty to receive feedback on their course through a managed focus group-type process where students respond to specific questions in a discussion led by a CTL consultant. A consultant from the CTL will visit your classroom for around 20-30 minutes and facilitate a discussion with students about things that are helping and hindering their learning. Students will work in small groups to reflect, respond, and reach consensus on the following questions such as:
- What aspects of this class (policies, schedule, assignments, use of technology, etc.) help your learning?
- What aspects of this class (policies, schedule, assignments, use of technology, etc.) hinder your learning?
- What could the instructor do to improve your learning in this class?
- What could you be doing differently to improve your learning in this class?
After the session, the CTL consultant will prepare a brief report summarizing the responses and meet with you for a private conversation to discuss the findings and offer suggestions for how to best respond to student feedback.
This type of program is well-established in many college and universities and is often called a Small Group Instructional Diagnosis.
