Designing Effective Writing Assignments

Resource Overview

Though writing-intensive assignments are often a requirement for courses across disciplines, designing a writing assignment that effectively serves your course’s goals can sometimes be challenging. This task has become even more complicated since the advent of generative AI, which has raised new questions about academic integrity, collaboration, and how students actually learn. The good news is that many of these challenges can be addressed through a few core design principles. This resource walks through several strategies for making your writing assignments more intentional and effective.

Before creating your writing assignment, know its purpose.

From lab reports to reflection essays to research papers, there are many types of writing assignments you can assign your students. Before you choose a format, though, it’s a good practice to know the purpose their writing is meant to serve. Two common purposes of writing in the college classroom are writing to learn and writing to demonstrate knowledge. Writing to learn often approaches writing as a cognitive process, a tool for working through ideas or practicing skills (ex: asking students to compose a response to an open-ended question before engaging in class discussion). On the other hand, writing to demonstrate knowledge focuses more on writing as a product used to gauge whether students have mastered certain elements of the course (ex: a lab report that presents and interprets the results of a student’s experiment). Oftentimes, instructors want students to do a little of both, and both kinds of writing can be beneficial. But each approach often calls for different kinds of assignments, different levels of stakes, and different feedback, and you’ll want to think about each of these criteria as you design your writing assignment.

Knowing the purpose of your writing assignment can also help you make better judgment calls about AI usage or restriction. When an assignment is meant to build or assess something specific, it’s easier to determine whether or where AI usage would compromise student learning. A student using AI to generate a reflection on their thinking process would likely undermine learning, since the general purpose of reflective pieces is to make student learning visible or to build metacognitive skills. However, if a student only uses AI to help format their sources according to a certain citation style for a paper where the effectiveness of their argumentation skills is what is being assessed, the risk to student learning is much lower.

Give your students an authentic audience.

Unless explicitly told otherwise, students are likely to assume that their writing assignments have an audience of one (you, the instructor). But writing—whether it takes place in the academy or a professional workplace—doesn’t happen in a vacuum. When you can, define an audience for your students that goes beyond whoever is grading the paper. Audiences for assignments can be fabricated, but they should have specific backgrounds, interests, or needs. For example: you could have students write a memo to a fictional city council proposing an increase to the minimum wage. Even if that specific city council doesn’t exist, most city councils tend to deal with a consistent set of concerns, like budget, revenue, and taxation. You can also give your students real audiences, like the op-ed section of a local newspaper, the editors of a journal in their field, or a future cohort of students taking the same class. Whether your audience is real or invented, having a specific reader in mind pushes students to make strategic choices about tone, structure, research, and argumentation that will often produce better writing.

Scaffold the writing process

From knowing where to start, to successfully budgeting time, to handling unfamiliar genres or conventions, a major writing assignment can bring up a lot of anxiety for students. Breaking down larger writing projects into various stages can make a writing assignment more approachable, and it also allows problems to surface earlier (when there is time to fix them).  For example, a student who needs to work on the scope of their topic or the credibility of their sources can course-correct if these issues are pointed out early on.

Scaffolding also helps prevent students from procrastinating until the last minute, which is often when the temptation to lean on unsanctioned AI usage is the strongest. Beyond these logistical benefits, research on scaffolded writing interventions has found that breaking a larger writing assignment into staged, feedback-supported steps can lead to significant gains in students’ self-confidence and performance (Allagui, 2024).

Scaffolding can look different depending on the assignment, but below are a few examples:

  • Staged submissions. Students turn in one part of their writing assignment (ex: topic proposal, annotated bibliography, introduction, partial or full rough draft, etc.) at a time.
  • Conferences or check-ins. Build in brief one-on-one or small group meetings where students can ask questions and get targeted feedback before moving forward.
  • Provide models. Share strong examples of the type of writing students are trying to do. If possible, spend some time in class walking through what makes these models effective.
  • In-class writing time. Dedicate a block of class time to drafting or revising so students can get started and ask you questions while you’re available to help.

Build in feedback loops

Feedback is most useful to students’ learning if they have the chance to act on it (Nicol & Macfarlane-Dick, 2006; Carless, 2019). Whenever possible, build in check-points where students receive feedback on their writing assignment before submitting it for a final grade. In smaller classes, you might give feedback directly on an early draft. In larger classes where that’s not feasible, structured peer review is a great alternative; just remember that students generally produce better peer reviews when they’re given explicit guidance on what to look for and what kind of feedback is most useful. Feedback loops can also be a place to address student use of AI directly, regardless of your class’s AI policy. If you allow some AI use, you might ask students to reflect on how they used AI as part of a draft submission so you can also provide feedback on that collaboration. If you prohibit AI usage in your class, requiring an early draft or outline builds in time for you to notice where students are encountering pain points in your assignment. This can help you identify areas where you may need to provide additional guidance on process or strategy.

Be explicit about the role AI should or should not play

Our definition of AI may not always be the same as our students’. For some students, AI usage might mean using a large-language model like ChatGPT to generate content for an assignment. However, there are hundreds of possible ways AI usage could show up in the classroom, and many students don’t realize that their instructor might consider the use of an AI translation tool as an aid in a foreign language class or accepting Grammarly’s sentence-level suggestions as AI usage. For each major writing assignment, it’s a good idea to remind students of your definition of AI and whether (or where) AI use is appropriate. Is any use appropriate at all? If so, is it fine for brainstorming but not drafting? Would you allow AI to give feedback on a draft the student wrote themselves, even if you don’t want it to write the draft itself? The answers to these questions often vary across disciplines, instructors, and even assignments within the same course. Leaving your AI policy unstated puts the burden on students to guess, which is where a lot of unintentional academic integrity issues start.
