How Can I Help
I partner with colleagues and students across WashU to strengthen teaching, learning, and assessment and to advance strategic initiatives that advance student learning and success. At the CTL, we are thought partners for navigating both established and emerging practices in teaching and learning. Our goal is ambitious: to help every WashU student develop the knowledge, skills, and capacities to become a trusted leader in their chosen field. Through inclusive excellence, creativity, and innovation, we work with our community to create meaningful and constructive change in teaching and learning at WashU and beyond.
Bio
Dr. Victoria “Tori” Mondelli is Assistant Provost and Executive Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Washington University in St. Louis. A higher education leader and scholar of teaching and learning, she partners with educators and academic leaders to strengthen teaching, learning, and assessment while advancing strategic initiatives across the university.
Before joining WashU, Tori founded and directed the Teaching for Learning Center at the University of Missouri, where she also held faculty affiliations in the College of Education & Human Development and the Department of History. At Mizzou, she led campus-wide initiatives to strengthen the review of teaching and develop thoughtful approaches to AI literacy and competencies in learning environments.
Tori holds a PhD in early modern European history. Her training as a historian sparked an early interest in writing across the curriculum and writing in the disciplines and continues to shape her approach to teaching and learning. Her work has since expanded to help educators and students draw on evidence-based, creative, and active approaches to learning in ways that fit their contexts and goals.
Tori is particularly passionate about game-based learning and the creative use of play to engage students in meaningful learning. With Dr. Joe Bisz, she is co-author of The Educator’s Guide to Designing Games and Creative Active-Learning Exercises: The Allure of Play (Teachers College Press, 2023). She has facilitated workshops internationally on game-based learning, creative pedagogy, and the use of play to create engaging learning experiences.
Across her work, Tori is committed to helping educators create learning environments in which students actively participate, understand how and why they are learning, and have meaningful opportunities to demonstrate what they know and can do. She is especially interested in using generative artificial intelligence to expand possibilities for active learning, transparent assessment, and thoughtful course design.
