7th Annual Teaching Center Graduate Student and Postdoc Recognition Reception

The Teaching Center hosted its 7th Annual Graduate Student and Postdoc Recognition Reception on May 2, 2019 in the Women’s Building Formal Lounge. The event honored more than 70 graduate students and postdocs from Washington University in St. Louis and Washington University School of Medicine who participated in the Teaching Center’s professional development programs in 2018-2019. The reception reflects participants’ commitment to pedagogical training and reflective teaching practices.

Honorees included participants in the EPIC Learning Community, an interdisciplinary program for graduate students in their first years at Washington University who are getting ready for or participating in their initial teaching experiences, as well as members of the Graduate Student Advisory Council, a group that helps the Teaching Center develop programming for graduate students and postdocs and coordinates monthly professional development events.

Other groups honored at the event include participants in Preparation in Pedagogy, a workshop-intensive professional development program for graduate students and postdocs, and Teaching Citation, a teaching-intensive professional-development program designed to help PhD students develop teaching experience and expertise in a multidisciplinary learning community.

The event also honored participants in various levels of the WU-CIRTL program, which prepares graduate students and postdocs for faculty positions in STEM disciplines. Three students this year, Lisa McLellan from DBBS, Kelsey Prissel from the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, and Kendra Smith from the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, achieved the highest level of WU-CIRTL by completing and presenting a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) project.

Students from the Introduction to SoTL seminar presented posters of their projects at the reception. Topics ranged from the effect of undergraduate chemical engineering capstone team roles on student perceptions of team success and dynamics to writing a research article in an introductory political science course.

Congratulations, all! See below for a full list of honorees.
