CTL hiring an Assistant Director for Educational Development with a humanities focus

The person in this position will work in collaboration with CTL staff to develop and deliver effective, evidence-based programming, training, and consultations primarily for humanities faculty. This position also supports graduate students and postdocs in the humanities.

The Center for Teaching and Learning at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for an Assistant Director for Educational Development with a humanities focus. Washington University is a highly-selective research university with a strong tradition of high quality teaching. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at Washington University plays a central role in promoting effective and innovative pedagogy across all schools of the university and assists faculty and other instructors in course design and the implementation of evidence-based, inclusive practice. The Assistant Director for Educational Development will work in collaboration with CTL staff to develop and deliver effective, evidence-based programming, training, and consultations primarily for humanities faculty. This position also supports graduate students and postdocs in the humanities. We are seeking a colleague to support existing programs and to help build innovative programs and services for the future.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting pedagogical and professional development programs for humanities and arts faculty
  • Consulting with faculty on effective and inclusive teaching practices and on their professional development in teaching. This includes one-on-one consultations and classroom observations
  • Providing programming and consultation support for graduate students and postdocs in the humanities and arts
  • Serving as project manager on the development, implementation, and refinement of CTL programs
  • Collaborating with colleagues on the planning, implementation, and evaluation of CTL events, such as course design institutes, virtual conversations, teaching triangles, language teaching fair, and other programs
  • Participating in university-wide and external efforts to enhance teaching and learning

Qualifications for the position include:

  • Ph.D. (humanities discipline preferred)
  • Experience working in or with a center for teaching and learning
  • At least 2 years of experience in teaching at a college or university (this experience may include working as a Teaching Assistant during graduate or post-graduate training)
  • Knowledge of effective pedagogies and best practices in higher-education teaching
  • Ability to synthesize educational-research findings and to communicate these findings to diverse academic audiences
  • Experience in developing and delivering workshops on teaching for graduate students, postdocs, or faculty

The successful candidate will have a strong interest in educational development  including: history of working in or with a center for teaching and learning, knowledge of evidence-based practices, experience developing and delivering programs to enhance  teaching and learning, and a familiarity with online or blended learning. Finally, the successful candidate should be able to communicate effectively in written, oral, and visual forms.
