‘Teaching in Tumultuous Times’ and Tips for the Classroom
“We are teaching in tumultuous times,” begins a recent blog post from the University of Michigan’s Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. Emotions experienced by individuals after events of terror often enter the classroom and so teachers should cultivate a compassionate learning environment with a strong sense of community. The blog post offers some tips for instructors, including making small gestures of recognition to foster a student’s ability to learn, deliberately framing and facilitating conversations about current events, and pointing students in the direction of campus resources.
