Transition from Kaltura to Panopto

Resource Overview

A dedicated resource for the Kaltura-to-Panopto transition project.

UPDATE: October 5, 2026: Re-linking in Canvas is Complete

All Kaltura videos have now been fully migrated to Panopto. When a student clicks on a video in your Canvas course, it should play with Panopto instead of Kaltura. There will be a limited number of cases in which you may need to re-embed videos migrated from Kaltura. Kaltura playlists will need to be manually replaced with Panopto playlists. For more information on this process, see the FAQ below.

If you have questions, please reach out to edtechtools@wustl.edu

POST-TRANSITION FAQ

Where can I find my Kaltura videos?

Your Kaltura videos will be found in the Kaltura Migrations folder in Panopto.

Go to this page for in-depth instructions on how to do so: How to Locate your Kaltura Media

I used to organize my course content using Kaltura Media Gallery. How do I do this in Panopto?

Panopto doesn’t have a replica of Kaltura Media Gallery. However, you can use the folder structure to mimic its functionality.

Please, understand that any videos uploaded to a course folder will be immediately available to students unless stated otherwise. This tutorial will show you how to control video availability: Controlling When Content Becomes Accessible

Will I need to re-embed my videos?
  • If you embedded your videos using the Kaltura Embed Tool, your videos will be automatically converted into Panopto embed links.
  • If you embedded your videos using iframe codes, you will need to manually re-embed your videos using the Panopto Embed Tool.
What will happen to my embed links after I copy a course for the next semester?

When you copy a Canvas course, Panopto knows to create reference copies of the embedded videos and update the embed links for you. This allows you to keep your course structure without carrying over things like comments and other metadata from the previous semester in those videos.

What if I am still seeing the Kaltura Player instead of the Panopto Player on my embedded videos?

Contact your department administrator so we can investigate the issue.

My playlists didn’t get relinked. What do I do?

This is expected behavior. Although Panopto did generate Panopto versions of your Kaltura playlists, any embedded Kaltura playlists will need to be manually removed and replaced with the Panopto version:

  1. Locate your playlists in your Kaltura Migrations folder.
  2. Edit the Canvas page where your Kaltura playlist resides and delete the playlist.
  3. Follow this tutorial to embed the Panopto version: Panopto Embed Tool

NOTE: A small number of Playlists were not able to be moved into user folders due to issues with ownership. If you are unable to find your Playlist in your folder, please reach out to your department admin or edtechtools@wustl.edu for additional support.

UPDATE: August 20, 2026: Using Panopto in Fall 2026

  • If you need to link to a video that was migrated from Kaltura, go into Panopto and look under the “Kaltura migrations” folder. See How to Locate your Kaltura Media for details.
    • Note: Kaltura recordings migrated to Panopto exist in both Panopto and Kaltura right now. The old Kaltura links will still direct to Kaltura until they are re-mapped to Panopto later in the Fall 2026 semester due to the ongoing transition to Panopto.
    • To embed Panopto content in Canvas, use the Panopto Embed tool.
  • If you need your Zoom meetings to automatically move to Panopto when the meeting ends, you need to enable that function in Panopto. See Panopto Tutorials: Zoom Opt In
  • For more ideas and technical support, please email edtechtools@wustl.edu

ANNOUNCEMENT: March 17, 2026: Kaltura and Annoto will be replaced by Panopto

  • Commitment to Education. Unlike other video platforms, Panopto was purpose-built for higher education. Panopto’s focus on education ensures that its features are specifically designed to support the needs of learners and instructors.
  • Enhanced Functionality: Panopto provides a user-friendly interface that streamlines video creation, editing, and sharing. Additional features include searchable transcripts, non-destructive editing tools, and analytics that track viewer engagement.
• User-Level Controls. Panopto offers robust access controls that allow content creators to define who can view, edit, or share videos through roles, group-based permissions, and flexible sharing options. Users also have direct control over their Zoom integration settings, allowing them to enable or disable the Panopto-Zoom connection without requiring administrator assistance.

The transition from Kaltura and Annoto to Panopto is rolling out in phases. As we approach each phase of the transition, we will post updates here and send follow-up communications with more specific details about dates, training opportunities, and support resources. We understand that switching to a new platform requires adjustment, and we’re committed to providing a variety of resources to ensure a smooth transition for the WashU community.

  • Non-Zoom Kaltura videos created before 1/01/2024 with at least 1 view
  • All Zoom videos that have been published in one or more Canvas courses

IMPORTANT: Kaltura quizzes, Annoto quizzes, and Annoto annotations will not transfer to Panopto and will need to be rebuilt. Our Panopto resource provides instructions for creating quizzes. Canvas quizzes are not affected.

Updating Canvas Video Links

Panopto will replace Kaltura video links in your Canvas courses with links to the corresponding Panopto videos. This will be done seemlessly during the Fall 2026 semester.  You should not need to relink videos manually.

Zoom-Panopto Integration

If you would like your Zoom recordings to be automatically imported into Panopto, you will need to opt in to the Zoom-Panopto integration. You can learn how to do so by following the instructions on our Zoom Opt-In page.

School of Medicine users: Please note that Zoom HIPAA accounts will not automatically record to Panopto.

YouTube Videos

YouTube videos that were imported into Kaltura will not transfer over to Panopto. You can add a YouTube video in Panopto by using the video editor.

Where Can I Find My Kaltura Content in Panopto?

All Kaltura content copied into Panopto has been placed within a Kaltura Migrations folder.  Content is organized by username of the video owner, with subfolders for the Canvas Course ID.  Video owners have full permission to view and modify the videos in their folders.
